Class Attendance and Participation
Attendance Policies and Procedures
A student is expected to attend all classes as scheduled, on time, and to remain in the classes for the full duration. It is recognized that a student may be absent from a class due to illness or a family emergency with the understanding that the following policy accounts for those events.
The Office of the Director has the discretionary authority to address each student’s attendance situation in a manner deemed to be in the best interests of the student and the Institute.
The attendance recording, monitoring and follow-up procedures are as follows:
- A full day of absence is defined as being absent for the number of hours a class is scheduled each day.
- Absences are recorded from the first day of the quarter irrespective of the reason for absence.
- A student will be considered withdrawn from the program if they are absent for 30 calendar days without notifying the Registrar.
Class attendance is a crucial part of the Graduate Programs.
In addition to the specific requirements of each class, the following attendance policy applies to all classes:
Two unexcused absences in a class reduces the earned grade one level (i.e., A to B, B to C, etc.).
Three unexcused absences reduces the grade two levels (i.e., A to C, B to D, etc.). No grade will be reduced below D based on the attendance policy. A pattern of tardiness will also reflect as an absence. The student who arrives late for class or leaves class early is charged with one-half hour of absenteeism for each one-half hour increment of absenteeism or part thereof.
Please note: Absences are for each individual class and apply only to the quarter in which they occur.
Students may request a leave of absence or to withdraw from a course by contacting the Institute Director or the Director of Admissions.
